In order to attend school, from age 10, I had to travel to a nearby town by train and bus. I often didn't have money for tickets and spent the trip trying to avoid being caught by the ticket checker. This daily journey started at 8 in the morning and ended at midnight. - [Building Bridges, Democracy and Playgrounds in the Margate Community](https://lakhankar.com/blog/building-bridges-democracy-and-playgrounds-in-the-margate-community/): Nestled in Edison, New Jersey, the Margate housing complex is home to 632 apartments and a vibrant, culturally diverse community—nearly 30% of whom trace their heritage to India. Yet, for more than three decades, until 2015, annual elections consistently failed to reach a quorum. This allowed the Board of Directors to handpick candidates, leaving residents with little say in governance. ## Pages - [Spring 2026 – GIS for CE and SDGs](https://lakhankar.com/teaching/gis-for-ce-and-sdgs/): Course Description: This course introduces students to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Data Science with applications directly aligned to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Lakhankar has also mentored many undergraduate and graduate students, led research meetings, secured grants, and organized professional development activities. Here is a list of Research Publications. - [World Adventure](https://lakhankar.com/adventure/): My love for travel and exploration began early in life. At just 10 years old, I left home for my education and commuted daily from my village to the nearest town by train and bus, always trying to get a window seat to watch the farmlands, village life, winding roads, and changing faces of fellow travelers. Those journeys sparked a deep curiosity in me and planted the desire to explore beyond my hometown. Over time, that curiosity became a true passion, and I strongly believe that travel is education. Historically, even pilgrimages were not only spiritual journeys but also a way to gain knowledge and experience the world. Travel teaches us about people, culture, traditions, and perspectives in ways that books cannot. Whether visiting historical landmarks, experiencing new landscapes, or sharing stories with locals, every trip enriches my understanding of the world. So far, I have visited 46 countries, and I plan to visit 54 more in the next seven years. - [Education outreach](https://lakhankar.com/outreach/): Driven by a commitment to education and research, I visit universities, colleges, and schools to inspire students and foster a passion for scholarly pursuits.
